Commencement Speaker

Catherine Schetina 鈥14, acclaimed writer and filmmaker, has been selected as this year鈥檚 Commencement ceremony speaker. Senior class co-presidents Bella Guizler Bonilla 鈥26 and Sophia Farrand 鈥26, steered the commencement speaker selection process on behalf of their classmates.

Schetina majored in English with a minor in religious studies while at Scripps and helped found Scripps Advocates, an organization that provides support and resources to survivors of sexual assault and harassment. Her career has exemplified creative excellence and intellectual curiosity, developing unique narratives that resonate with audiences and peers alike. She wrote on FX鈥檚 Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series The Bear for five seasons, and her episode, 鈥淣apkins,鈥 was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Episodic Comedy award. She is currently a writer and producer on the upcoming Netflix drama series The Body.

Schetina鈥檚 original screenplay Pure was named as the number one script on the , an annual survey of Hollywood鈥檚 most well-regarded unproduced scripts. She will make her directorial debut with the project this fall.

A Los Angeles resident, Schetina lives with her wife, Emma Gavin 鈥14, and two black cats. She also helps run a mutual aid operation that serves 700 weekly meals to the city鈥檚 unhoused residents.

Traditions

糖心TV is steeped in traditions that have withstood the test of time, some of the oldest and most beloved of which are woven into the commemoration and pageantry of Commencement. Each class of Scripps graduates goes on to become part of the College鈥檚 distinguished history, carrying forth the Scripps legacy.
